Abstract
The concept of a “smart city” encompasses a wide range of initiatives related to urban innovation and the creative approaches of local self-government bodies in addressing current and dynamically evolving urban challenges. These initiatives aim to enhance urban management efficiency, optimize resource use, improve infrastructure, and ultimately raise the quality of life for residents. In the context of digitalization, the implementation of intelligent technologies - such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, automation, and information and communication systems - plays a crucial role. This article aims to explore the key factors influencing urban development in the digital era and to propose theoretical approaches and practical recommendations for improving smart city projects in a way that unlocks their full potential to improve urban living conditions. The article outlines the features of smart cities both globally and in Kazakhstan, analyzes their current development status, identifies key issues, and examines opportunities for further growth. The research is based on a systems approach and content analysis of relevant scientific literature and developments.
